For a small island, Koh Larn punches above its weight for photos — it's properly hilly (up to ~180 m), so you get sweeping sea views, and the water on the right beach genuinely photographs that postcard turquoise. Here's where to point the camera and, just as importantly, when.

The hilltop viewpoints

The central ridge gives the island's best wide shots — bays below, boats dotting the sea, and on a clear day the Pattaya skyline shimmering across the water. Several viewpoints are signed and reachable by scooter or songthaew. Late afternoon light is kindest; haze is worst in the burning season, clearest after monsoon rain.

The hilltop Big Buddha

A scenic, calm high point with a seated Buddha image and a sweeping outlook — strong for both the subject and the view. Shoot respectfully (it's a sacred site: modest dress, no intrusive angles), and pair it with the viewpoints on a ridge loop.

The KOH LARN hillside sign

The big white letters spelling the island's name are the trophy shot. Go early or midweek to avoid waiting for others to clear the frame, and use afternoon light. It's a quick stop on the same scooter loop as the Buddha and viewpoints.

Beaches & water

For clear-water and sand shots, the west and south beaches — Samae, Tien, Nual — deliver the colour. Early morning gives the calmest, glassiest water and empty sand before the crowds and boats churn it up. Samae faces roughly west, so it's also your sunset frame.

Timing cheat-sheet

  • Dawn–9am: empty beaches, glassy clear water, soft light.
  • Late afternoon: warm light on the viewpoints and the sign.
  • Sunset: the west side (Samae) or a hilltop.
  • Dry season (Nov–Apr): clearest water and air; post-rain days are crisp.

Tip: Carry a dry bag and lens cloth — sea spray on the boats and humidity will fog a lens fast. A polariser tames the glare and deepens that turquoise.

The verdict

Do a morning beach shoot for water and emptiness, then a late-afternoon ridge loop (viewpoints, Big Buddha, the sign) for views and sunset. See the viewpoints and the sign for how to reach each.
