Most Koh Larn visitors come through Bangkok, but a growing number fly straight into U-Tapao (airport code UTP) — Pattaya’s own airport, southeast of the city — on charters and a handful of scheduled flights. If that is you, here is the honest shape of getting from the runway to the island.
Step 1: U-Tapao to Pattaya
U-Tapao sits roughly 40 km southeast of central Pattaya — about a 45-minute drive in normal traffic. There is no train and no ferry from the airport itself, so you are travelling by road to Pattaya first. Three sensible options:
- Airport taxi or limousine — the most direct. Counters inside the terminal arrange fixed-rate cars to Pattaya; agree the price before you set off and expect to pay a set airport rate rather than a meter.
- Grab (ride-hailing) — usually cheaper than the airport limousine counter if cars are available; book it in the app once you have signal or airport wifi.
- Shuttle or minibus — some flights and hotels arrange shared transfers; the cheapest if your timing lines up, but less frequent than a private car.
Step 2: Pattaya to Bali Hai Pier
Have your driver take you to Bali Hai Pier at the southern end of Walking Street — that is where the Koh Larn boats leave. If you are checking into a hotel first, you can reach the pier afterwards by songthaew (the blue baht buses down Beach Road), a short Grab, or a motorbike taxi.
Step 3: The ferry across
From Bali Hai, the public ferry is about 40฿ and takes 30–45 minutes to Na Baan; in season there are also direct boats to Tawaen. A speedboat does the crossing in 15–20 minutes and can land you on any beach. Full details, times and pier tips are in our getting there guide.
Can you do it the same day?
If you land in the morning, yes — a smooth transfer puts you on an early-afternoon boat with time for a swim, as long as you mind the last ferry back to the mainland in the late afternoon. If you arrive in the afternoon or evening, do not rush it: spend the night in Pattaya and take a relaxed early boat the next morning, which is the better island day anyway.
Tip: Whatever your arrival time, treat Koh Larn as a fresh morning rather than a tired same-day dash. A night in Pattaya near the south end of town puts you minutes from Bali Hai for the first, calmest, least crowded ferry.
