The west-facing beaches and hilltops take the evening light. Time it right and the day ends well.
Sunset means the west side. Samae faces roughly west and holds the late light beautifully, with Tien quieter just to the south; for the biggest view, ride up to a ridge viewpoint or the Big Buddha as the light softens. The catch is the last ferry — if you're day-tripping, you'll often have to choose between sunset and the boat home, so check return times carefully. The real fix is to stay overnight: that's when you get the sunset and the quiet evening island without watching the clock.
