Best for Snorkeling

Manage expectations — this isn't the Andaman — but the rocky points hold clear-ish water and fish. Here's where to look.

The single biggest factor is timing: go early, on a calm morning in the dry season, before boats and swimmers stir up the sand. Then it's about spot selection — the rocky points at either end of Samae are the best, with Tien and the edges of Nual close behind. Bring your own mask for fit and hygiene, wear a rash guard instead of slathering on sunscreen near the water, and don't expect pristine reef — you're here for clear-ish water and plenty of small tropical fish. The busy main beach at Tawaen is the weakest; for clearer water, take a boat trip from there.
