Koh Larn has eight swimming beaches and they are not interchangeable — picking the right one for your day is the single biggest factor in whether you love the island or leave underwhelmed. Here's a fast decision guide. (For the full verdicts and ratings, see our ranked beaches guide — this is the shortcut.)
Match your priority to a beach
- Best all-round day (clear water + facilities, calmer than the main beach) → Samae.
- Quiet and scenic, clean water, fewer crowds → Tien.
- Everything to hand — facilities, food, water sports, easiest with kids → Tawaen.
- A pretty white-sand cove with monkeys nearby → Nual (Monkey Beach).
- Total seclusion, bring-your-own-everything → Thong Lang or Laem Tien.
- Near the village, quick to reach, cheap food → Ta Yai.
- A quiet stop on a beach-hopping loop → Sangwan.
By who you're travelling with
Families: Tawaen for the calm marked swim zone and everything on tap, or Samae for gentler, clearer water. Couples: Tien or Samae for quiet and sunset. Friends after water sports: Tawaen. Solo and after peace: Tien, Thong Lang or Laem Tien. Mixed group that can't agree: base at Samae — it does most things well.
By how much effort you'll make
Least effort (land and stay put): Tawaen, right by the pier-and-songthaew chain. A little effort for a better swim: Samae or Tien, a short hill transfer away. Real effort for solitude: the remote north-west and east-cape beaches, by scooter or boat, with no facilities.
Tip: Don't default to Tawaen just because it's easiest. Ten to fifteen minutes over the hill to Samae or Tien buys noticeably clearer water and a calmer day.
The verdict
Pick by priority, group and effort — most first-timers are happiest at Samae (best balance) or Tawaen (most convenient). When you're ready for the full picture, every beach is ranked and profiled in our beaches guide.
