Getting Around

Getting around Koh Larn — songthaew, scooter, fares & map

Koh Larn is small (about 4.6 km long) but properly hilly, rising to ~180 m. Here's how people move between the village and the beaches — and the honest safety picture.

Updated 16 June 2026 · We visit. We don't sell placement.

Ride only if you're confident. Koh Larn's roads are steep, narrow and busy, and scooter/ATV crashes are one of the most common ways visitors get hurt here. Songthaews are the cheap, easy default for most people.

~30–50฿ pp, set routes

Songthaew (shared taxi)

Converted pick-ups run set routes from Na Baan to the main beaches (Tawaen, Samae, Tien) for a fixed shared fare. The standard, cheap, low-stress way around. Confirm the fare before you ride; a charter to a quieter beach costs more.

Negotiated, short hops

Motorbike taxi

Quick point-to-point rides for one passenger. Agree the fare first; fine for a short hop when no songthaew is going your way.

Approx from a few hundred baht/day

Scooter rental

Total freedom to explore — but the island's hills are steep and narrow and crashes are common. Ride only if you're experienced; wear the helmet; check the bike and photograph any damage before you take it. An international licence is the legal expectation.

Approx by the hour

ATV / quad rental

Popular for the hills and dirt tracks. Same cautions as scooters — confident riders only, helmet on, agreed price up front.

Free

Walking

Ta Yai and parts of the village are walkable from Na Baan; the far beaches are over steep ridges and too far on foot. Fine for pottering around the village, not a plan for the whole island.

Negotiated

Boat taxi

Longtails and speedboats can shuttle you between beaches by sea — handy for the hard-to-reach bays like Thong Lang or Laem Tien. Agree the price and pickup first.

Which should you use? First time, no plan, or with kids? Take songthaews — cheap and easy. Confident rider wanting to see everything? Rent a scooter and do a beach-hopping loop. Want a specific quiet beach with no fuss? A speedboat drop or boat taxi is worth it.
