Quietly the best self-guided way to see the coast — rent a kayak or SUP and paddle the calm bays.

On a glassy morning, Koh Larn’s sheltered west and south bays are made for paddling. Single and double kayaks — sometimes clear-bottom ones — and SUP boards rent by the hour from watersports vendors on Tawaen and Samae. It’s the quietest, most self-directed way to see the coast: hug the shoreline, peek at fish over the rocky points, or reach a calmer patch of sand. The catch is the wind — get out early, because the afternoon breeze and boat wash turn a gentle paddle into hard work, and you must stay clear of the jet-ski and boat lanes.

How it works

Walk up to a watersports vendor on Tawaen or Samae, agree the hourly rate and a return time, grab a life vest, and go. No booking or guide required; SUP is easiest to learn on a flat-calm morning.

Anyone reasonably comfortable on the water. Kayaks suit pairs and the less confident; SUP rewards a bit of balance and calm conditions.

What to expect

Calm-morning paddling along the shore, clear-ish water, and a real workout if there’s any wind. Conditions deteriorate as the day heats up and the chop builds.

Safety

Wear the life vest, stay close to shore and inside the calm zones, keep well clear of jet-ski and boat lanes, and don’t head out if it’s windy or choppy. Tell someone your plan and your return time.
